  1. I think there are a lot of possible themes that could come from the story. It all depends on how you are looking at the text. One of the biggest themes that I found was Take what happens and make the best of it. I really started to notice this theme when I got to chapter four and also in chapter eight. In these two chapters, Deryn is flying a beastie and a storm is approaching. She doesn’t know exactly what to do, so she stays in flight. I decided this was a fitting theme because she needed to take that opportunity to be flying with the beast and make the best of what happens even though the approaching storm could be a threat. The theme Take what happens and make the best of it is also shown in others chapters about Aleksander. He finally realizes that he has been kidnapped, so he just has to make the best of it and try to stay safe.

  2. The theme would probably be to take whatever happens to you and be optimistic and make it as well to your favor as you can. One example is when Alek turns the situation of him being captured to something a lot better. He turned the situation into his favor instead of the Darwinist favor. He was even outnumbered with a crew of 5 against a whole ship (not a battle, but negotiation of supplies and freedom).
